A Roof Above My Head
Loblolly Pine
8' x 8' x 4'
2024
I wanted to create a piece that explores the labor required to produce the materials we consume in everyday construction. Using a chainsaw I milled this wood from a fallen loblolly pine tree to explore the effort and time required to produce lumber. Questioning conventional processes of drying the wood was also an important part of this piece as I chose to skip the lengthy process of allowing the moisture to leave the timbers to encourage checking and warping of the members over time. A Roof Above My Head requires viewers to reflect on our use of lumber and how easily these common materials are taken for granted.
