Burl is a reflection of nature’s resiliency and adaptability to stressful environments. I wanted to take advantage of the materials given to me and express them in a way that reflects the underlying implications of the materials themselves. I used steel rod to construct an armature resembling the shape and size of a tree burl, a growth that can form on a tree from various stressors whether that’s breaking a limb or a viral infection. This armature was then attached directly to a piece of a fallen tree that I needed to move for other purposes. The result is a section of tree with a burl formed on the side by steel, effectively representing the negative effects of our industrialized world on the natural environment.
